PORCELAIN & FINE CHINA
GERMAN PORCELAIN
These Porcelain items are hand-made in Germany by a team of craftspeople. The company was founded 90 years ago. The region once had 1000 ceramicists and 8 ceramic factories, and now has just 15 ceramicists and 1 ceramic factory. We enjoy bringing their skill and dedication to their craft to our customers.
A few thoughts about Porcelain – it is a very clean raw material, with few metal oxides, which is why it is so white. It is also very hard wearing and resistant. In fact, in days gone by, porcelain was chosen for signs in Victorian gardens as it dealt so well with heat and frosts. The making process is fairly complex and involves 3 separate firings. When gold work is included, it is applied with oil. During the firing process the oil evaporates leaving the gold in place.

ITALIAN DINNERWARE SETS
We are increasingly asked to source a wide selection of porcelain and fine dining china. This is an example of a well established Italian porcelain producer. We feature this on our website as we recently sent a large tea set to the United States of America.

FRENCH BASKET PORCELAIN
We very much enjoy working with this French earthenware company. Their approach has stayed much the same for the last two centuries – hand made and hand painted. Proud of their French heritage, they maintain the historical traditions and ancestral techniques. Each item is handcrafted and cut by hand by master craftspeople. Their elegant simplicity and basket designs have stood the test of time and changing fashions.

HAND-PAINTED FRENCH PORCELAIN
These items are made of Limoges porcelain and are some of the last collections to be painted by hand. The painters are chosen and personally trained to create a light ‘water colour’ style. The painters come from Limoges and in many cases their families have been involved over many generations, using traditional methods that were originally developed in the 1800s. There can be no mistake so a precise hand is required! As a result, we like to view each item as a work of art. The company is an advocate of preserving family businesses and traditional craftsmanship. They are also an important part of the local economy.
